What Type of Equipment Is Used?

The main tool is the bursting head, a conical device that breaks the old pipe and pushes its pieces into the surrounding soil. This head is attached to a new pipe, which is pulled into the space left by the old pipe. The pulling is done by a machine that uses rods or cables to drag the bursting head and new pipe through the old pipe’s path

The Pipe Bursting Process

  • Access Pit Excavation: Small entry and exit pits are excavated at strategic points along the sewer line.
  • Preparation: The old pipe is cleaned, and a winch cable or pulling rod is threaded through the existing pipe.
  • Bursting and Replacement: A bursting head attached to the new pipe is pulled through the old pipe using the winch. As it moves, it fractures the old pipe and simultaneously pulls the new pipe into place.
  • Connection: The new pipe is connected to the existing sewer system at both ends, ensuring a seamless fit.
  • Inspection and Testing: The new pipe is inspected and tested to ensure proper installation and functionality.
  • Restoration: The access pits are backfilled, and the surface is restored to its original condition.

Generally, the actual bursting and pipe installation process can take a few hours to a couple of days for typical residential projects. However, when considering the entire project, including preparation, excavation of access pits, and post-installation inspection, the total time can range from one to several days.
